How to Upload Your Teaser Film to Instagram in the Best Quality
So your teaser has arrived, and you’re ready to share it with the world. I know you’re excited to hit “Post”, but there are a couple of things to do first to make sure that Instagram doesn’t ruin your premiere by making your video look like it was shot on a flip phone.
This guide will walk you through the whole process, from start to finish.
Step 1: Change This Setting First
Instagram compresses videos by default to save data. You’ll want to turn that off before you upload anything.
On iPhone:
- Open Instagram and tap your profile photo (bottom right)
- Tap the three lines in the top right corner
- Scroll down to the Your app and media section
- Tap Data usage and media quality
- Toggle on Upload at Highest Quality
On Android:
- Open Instagram and tap your profile photo (bottom right)
- Tap the three lines in the top right corner
- Tap Settings and Privacy
- Tap Account
- Tap Cellular Data Use
- Toggle on Upload at Highest Quality
That’s it. Do this once and you won’t need to touch it again.
Quick note: This setting uses more data when you’re not on Wi-Fi, so it’s worth waiting until you’re connected to Wi-Fi before uploading.
Step 2: Post the Film
- Tap the + button at the bottom of the screen (it may be top left, depending on the type of account you have)
- Along the bottom, select Post (not Story or Reel)
- Find your teaser film in your camera roll and tap it
- Tap Next in the top right corner, then tap the arrow in the top right corner.
Step 3: Choose Your Cover Frame (the Thumbnail)
This is the frame that will show on your grid and in the feed before anyone presses play — so it’s worth taking a moment to choose a good one.
- On the preview screen, tap Edit Cover
- It can take around 30 seconds to load, but you’ll soon see a slider running along the bottom of the video — drag it left or right to scrub through the footage
- When you land on a frame you love, tap Done
Step 4: Add Your Caption and Post
- Write your caption, tag everybody you’d like to tag, add your location etc.
- Tap Share
That’s it. Your teaser film will upload in the best quality Instagram allows, with a cover frame you actually chose.
